Today I want to talk about the term “getting back on track”. What does this mean for you? Does this mean, “OK after this party on Saturday, no more sweets, junk, or foods you may label as “bad”? Does this mean extra cardio, harder workouts? Drinking only smoothies? While this “deadline” may make it seem easier for us to “get back on track” what we are actually doing is setting ourselves up for an “all or nothing” mentality.
Think about it, how often have you gone about your day, your nutrition is on point, until one slight temptation pops up, if it’s in your office, school or home, and you decide to maybe have a few bites of what is in front of you. Then maybe feelings of guilt start to settle in. “Well I already ruined my diet for the day”, “there’s no point in going to the gym”. A simple comparison with this idea is imagining getting a flat tire, would you proceed to slash your other tires to make them flat as well? I don’t think so.
I’ve been there too, and at times still struggle with this! At times I hold perfectionist type qualities, and as my fiancé says, “It’s one of your best, and worst qualities”. I encourage you to stop and think about your mentality with nutrition, and your fitness goal. If you constantly feel like you are “starting over” with both your diet or workouts, it may be time to re- evaluate what you are doing. If what you are doing does not appear like you may be able to do it one month, or even longer down the road, I urge you to find a sustainable method for you.
Remind yourself that you are not “bad” for this. You are human. Personally, I have been there, and this is how I was able to finally have a healthier relationship with fitness and food. This is why I am so passionate in instilling this in my friends, family, and clients! Making this sustainable, will allow you to make this a lifestyle. We know ourselves best, we know what works for us, and what doesn’t work for us. Most of all, if you are confused, it’s ok to ask for help! That’s what us, your trainers are here for. We aren’t just here to program your workouts; we are here to also help you through each aspect of your fitness journey, to allow you to be the absolute best version of yourself.
